Sincere Bonds, Enduring Friendship
——Observation on Guangxi’s Efforts to Boost China-ASEAN People-to-People Exchanges
On January 22, recalling the series of closing events for the 2024-2025 China-ASEAN Year of People-to-People Exchanges held at Jonker Street in Malacca at the end of last year, Malaysian Chinese Dai Xinyi still has vivid memories: “People from different countries and cultural backgrounds made friends through people-to-people exchanges and connected with each other sincerely, and we eventually became good friends. This is a memory worth cherishing for a lifetime.”
As a frontier and window for China’s opening-up and cooperation with ASEAN, and the only provincial-level administrative region in China connected with ASEAN countries by both land and sea, Guangxi had a clear and firm role in this year-long cross-year people-to-people exchange event: it is not only a geographically close “neighbor”, but also a like-minded “bosom friend”. Over the past year, with sincerity as the brush and affection as the ink, Guangxi has transformed its geographical advantages into kinship effects, focused on key areas such as youth, media and digital-intelligent innovation, continuously unleashed the potential of local practical cooperation, and injected profound Guangxi cultural and people-to-people strength into building a closer China-ASEAN Community with a Shared Future.
Youth Walking Together: From Exchange to Heart-to-Heart Connection
2025 marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Vietnam and the China-Vietnam Year of People-to-People Exchanges. From April 14 to 15, General Secretary Xi Jinping paid a state visit to Vietnam at the invitation, and together with the Vietnamese side, mapped out a new blueprint for building the China-Vietnam Community with a Shared Future.
On the eve of the visit, a vibrant dialogue session for young Chinese and Vietnamese media professionals themed “Dialogue in the New Era” was held in the studio hall of the Voice of Vietnam. It was the only supporting youth exchange event organized by a local media outlet during General Secretary Xi Jinping’s visit, where Guangxi took the initiative to stand at this important diplomatic node.
The dialogue revolved around topics such as “Chinese Path to Modernization and Vietnam’s Development Vision”, “International Communication in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” and “How Youth Can Tell Shared Stories Well”. There was no scripted speech at the event, but only sincere collision of views and heartfelt emotional resonance. “This is not a meeting where you ‘sit and listen to reports’, but a real ‘dialogue’,” commented Nguyen Thu Vy, Assistant Editor-in-Chief of the Voice of Vietnam. “Youth are the most dynamic and potential force in the relations between the two countries,” a young Guangxi journalist said, striking a chord with the audience. On and off the stage, despite different languages and identities, everyone had the same eager gaze.
The steps of youth dialogue did not stop in Hanoi. A few months later, the baton of youth exchange was passed to Jakarta, Indonesia. On August 29, 2025, the “Dialogue with the World” Exchange Meeting for Young Chinese and Indonesian Media Professionals was held at the headquarters of Indonesia’s national television station. “Youth are the backbone of the times, and our dialogue together is shaping the future hand in hand,” said Imam, President of Indonesia’s national television station, in his speech. A young Indonesian journalist said emotionally: “We have not only witnessed the 75-year friendship between Indonesia and China, but are also writing the next chapter of our story.”
If the dialogues of young media professionals in Hanoi and Jakarta outlined the main line of youth exchanges, the dialogue in Liuzhou made this main line more three-dimensional and extended. On November 7, 2025, the China-ASEAN Youth Media Professionals Dialogue Session was held in Liuzhou, Guangxi. As an important event of the 2025 ASEAN Media Partners Cooperation Week, it further deepened youth exchanges. Lin Lianru, a reporter from Thailand’s Nation TV, said: “This trip to Guangxi has given me a deeper understanding of artificial intelligence beyond conceptual knowledge.” Qiu Liefeng, General Manager of Indonesia’s Balata Media, emphasized the value of people-to-people exchanges with the lyrics he wrote for the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway: “When we stand united and hand in hand, nothing is impossible in the world.” The applause echoed long and loud.
As an ancient saying goes: “Sincere words are as fragrant as orchids.” From Hanoi to Jakarta, and then to Liuzhou, youth dialogues across mountains and seas echoed each other. Guangxi has promoted youth-to-youth exchanges to evolve into era-to-era connections, deepened “exchanges” into “heart-to-heart communication”, continuously enhanced mutual trust and resolved doubts through sincere dialogues, and solidified the public opinion foundation for the future cooperation between China and ASEAN countries.
Taking Media as a Bridge: Understanding the Real China Through On-Site Visits
If youth dialogue has opened a window of understanding, then the on-site visits of “Approaching the Real China” have rooted cognition deeply in the reality.
On the night of June 24, 2025, at the Xinhui Academy in Nanning. As dusk fell and lights turned on, the ancient courtyard unfolded quietly in the night. A unique intangible cultural heritage display pushed the atmosphere of the 2025 ASEAN Chinese-Language Media Tour in Guangxi to a climax.
On the stage, Nanning Opera performers danced gracefully with their water sleeves, every move poised and controlled; on one side of the stage, the polyphonic chorus of the Dong Grand Song was vigorous and melodious, as if leading people deep into the Dong villages surrounded by mountains. The clear and distant sound of the Dong pipa intertwined with the rhythmic tapping of oil tea wooden mallets. Nurl Afra, a reporter from Indonesia’s Elora TV, recorded the scenes while exclaiming: “The melody of the Dong pipa has something in common with Indonesian musical instruments, and the cultures of the two countries have long resonated with each other.”
Such resonance has been constantly inspired through in-depth visits. In August 2025, a press delegation composed of 9 major Vietnamese media outlets including the Vietnam News Agency, Vietnam National Television and the Voice of Vietnam conducted an 8-day joint interview in Guangxi.
Their footprints covered places ranging from Nanning’s Three Streets and Two Alleys bearing historical memories, the former site of Yucai School recording the profound China-Vietnam friendship, the modern city thriving on the bank of the Yongjiang River, the construction site of the Pinglu Canal embodying the “China Speed”, to the China-ASEAN Artificial Intelligence Application Cooperation Center exploring the frontiers of science and technology, and the vivid frontlines of rural vitalization.
Cameras captured the pulsing vitality of Chinese modernization, and interview notebooks were filled with vivid and tangible development stories. “In the past, we learned about China mostly through materials. This time, we walked into the real China,” sighed Nguyen Minh Tuan, a reporter from Vietnam National Television. At the top of Qingxiu Mountain, the press delegation took a special group photo – the green mountains were as green as daisy, the sun was bright, and young journalists of different nationalities stood side by side, smiling from the bottom of their hearts. At that moment, the camera froze not only the scenery, but also the moment when trust was born.
This was not a simple “visit trip”, but a journey of cognition, understanding and trust. In cooperation with overseas media, Guangxi has continuously innovated forms: replacing the one-way mode of “I speak and you listen” with “walking and seeing together”; replacing “one-way communication” with “co-narrating stories”; replacing “being reported” with “recording together”.
During the 2025 ASEAN Media Partners Cooperation Week in Liuzhou, San Zhanta, a reporter from the Cambodian National Media, filmed and shared his experiences all the way. “The cultural IPs created by Guangxi are impressive. From Liuzhou, where a bowl of rice noodles has attracted global attention, we can feel the tremendous efforts made by the Chinese government for national development.” He shared his feelings with international friends through on-site videos: “Watching online is not as good as experiencing it in China in person.”
As a poem goes: “Distance cannot separate bosom friends, even a thousand miles apart is like a neighbor.” Face-to-face exchanges and immersive experiences have made the real, multi-dimensional and comprehensive China more clearly visible. As a Malaysian journalist put it: “We are not only recording Guangxi, but also understanding China; we are not only seeing development, but also feeling the warmth.” When the truth enters the heart, even a thousand miles apart is like being next to each other.
Joining Hands for Innovation: Empowering a Better Future with Digital and Intelligence
People-to-people exchanges in the new era have been endowed with richer connotations and dimensions. In 2025, Guangxi actively explored the development path of “R&D in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou + Integration in Guangxi + Application in ASEAN”, making new technologies such as artificial intelligence a new bond to promote communication and understanding.
From July to November 2025, the AI Empowers Thousands of Industries Super League hosted by Guangxi attracted more than 10,000 teams to participate, including 604 ASEAN teams. This was not only a contest of technologies, but also a dialogue of civilizations and a co-dance of innovations.
In September 2025, at the opening ceremony of the 22nd China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) and the China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (CABIS), Chen Gang, Secretary of the CPC Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Committee, delivered an off-script speech wearing a domestically produced AI glasses. His light remark “You can’t see it, but I can” drew a knowing laugh from the audience and also brought Guangxi’s exploration in the field of artificial intelligence application into the international spotlight.
Shortly after, the Guangxi Daily Newspaper Group received an email from major Vietnamese media outlets requesting to co-host a special training on “AI and New Media Application”. Guangxi responded quickly and organized experts from domestic artificial intelligence enterprises and universities to give lectures. At the end of October 2025, a delegation from the Voice of Vietnam visited Guangxi for study. A Vietnamese editor used the newly learned technology to create his first Chinese short video in class and exclaimed: “This will change our way of communication.”
At the same time, a rich variety of cultural exchange activities took place throughout the year. In March 2025, the event “Guangxi March 3rd · Folk Sounds Spreading Across the Globe” entered Phnom Penh, Cambodia for the first time; in May, the 2025 Study in Guangxi International Education Exhibition was held in Cambodia and Thailand, making the brand of “Study in Guangxi” increasingly renowned; in December, a batch of newly published books covering humanities, economy, literature and other categories departed from Nanning and were donated to Duon Hoa University…
From urban forums and academic seminars to cultural and creative cooperation and sports events, each concrete and down-to-earth practical project is like a trickling stream, continuously converging into a river that enhances understanding and consolidates trust.
“We are not only partners, but also like neighbors, friends and family,” a young Laotian commented, voicing the heartfelt feelings of many. As Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN, said: “Close people-to-people exchanges will promote mutual understanding, affinity, and trust between the people of ASEAN countries and China.”
One year of hard work has left clear footprints. A gorgeous picture scroll with major-country diplomacy as the background and people-to-people exchanges as the brush and ink is slowly unfolding between China’s Guangxi and ASEAN countries – Guangxi has vividly interpreted the profound connotation of “Those who connect with each other sincerely will last forever” through concrete actions.
Facing the future, this road of friendship and win-win results paved by people-to-people exchanges will surely become wider and more solid, and will continue to inject surging and warm Guangxi strength into building a closer China-ASEAN Community with a Shared Future.
