Dr.Zhang Lu President of International Zheng He Society  presides over the ” Mayor’s of Maritime Silk Road and China Initiatives”  roundtable.

The 2023 Maritime Silk Road City Influence Mayor Exchange Conference was held in Wenzhou from November 24th to 25th. The conference was organized by Xinhua News and the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province, and hosted by the People’s Government of Wenzhou, Xinhua News Zhejiang Branch, and Qing Shan Holdings Group. Dr. Zhang Lu, President of the International Zheng He Society in Singapore, was invited to attend the conference and served as the moderator for the Roundtable Forum for Mayors from China and Abroad.

This international forum was characterized by high specifications, strong professionalism, and significant international influence, attracting partners from around the world. Sixteen foreign officials from 13 countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, as well as mayors of cities along the Silk Road, government officials, representatives of domestic and foreign experts and scholars, elites from various overseas communities, associations, institutions, and businesses, totaling more than 400 people, participated in the main conference, parallel forums, exhibitions, performances, and other activities. Leaders from national ministries, Xinhua News, the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province, and others were invited to attend the conference, and speeches were given by Chief Editor Lv Yansong and Wang Wenxu, Vice Governor of Zhejiang Province.

Wenzhou, a city founded 2,215 years ago and a county established 1,700 years ago, is an important node city on the Maritime Silk Road. The hosting of this significant event in Wenzhou, at a new starting point and with a global perspective, takes into account the world’s overall situation, trends of the times, and industry dynamics. It promotes cooperation and exchange among countries along the Maritime Silk Road and further development of world-class Maritime Silk Road city construction.

The conference invited heavyweight experts to participate in the forum discussion. President Zhang Lu presided over a high-profile, high-level, and high-quality Maritime Silk Road Mayor Forum—the Xinhua News Agency China-Foreign Mayors Roundtable Forum, kicking off a splendid and diverse intellectual feast. Participants engaged in discussions on global perspectives, focusing on themes such as the inheritance, mutual learning, and cooperation of cities along the Maritime Silk Road. They delved into the global development of Maritime Silk Road cities and cultural heritage, contributing ideas for the construction of the Maritime Silk Road. Distinguished guests included Yasiru Bandara, founder of the Belt and Road Initiative in Sri Lanka, Ákos Emöd, Mayor of Győr in Hungary, Kweku Lisk, Deputy Mayor of Freetown in Sierra Leone, Alessio Pascucci, Mayor of Chieti in Italy, Sònia Recasens Alsina, former Deputy Mayor of Barcelona, and Li You, Deputy Mayor of Nantong.

To gain a comprehensive and diverse understanding of Wenzhou’s millennium-old Oujiang culture, President Zhang Lu, Pereira, Director of the International Relations and Foreign Cooperation Bureau of Cáceres in Badajoz, Yasiru, the initiator of the “Belt and Road” in Sri Lanka, and Evelyn Chérie, Mayor of Brazzaville, Congo, among other foreign guests, visited and inspected the Five Horses historical district and the Shuomen ancient port site, experiencing Wenzhou’s culture and history while deeply exploring the era connotations of the Silk Road culture.

The Shuomen ancient port site in Wenzhou, listed as one of the top ten archaeological discoveries in China in 2022, forms a complete system of city, port, and navigational markers. It fills a critical gap in the port-related heritage of the Maritime Silk Road system and is considered the most important archaeological discovery of maritime Silk Road port sites at home and abroad to date. The “Nan Shi” (Southern Market) historical district, with a history of over 1,600 years, serves as the traditional commercial center of Wenzhou. The Five Horses district is an essential support for the portrayal of the “Maritime Silk Road story” at the Shuomen ancient port.

President Zhang Lu, interviewed by reporters after visiting the Shuomen ancient port site, said, “The Shuomen ancient port site is an irreplaceable classic example and a supporting heritage point in the Maritime Silk Road heritage application process. It is a rare and significant discovery. We need to think about how to promote this valuable ancient port site to the world, activate its practical significance, and jointly build the Maritime Silk Road with an international perspective.”

The forum, themed “Mutual Learning, Mutual Reference, and Win-Win Cooperation,” adopted an activity framework of “1+5+N,” including a main exchange conference, five parallel thematic conferences, and numerous special supporting activities.

Guests from around the world and various sectors gathered in Wenzhou to engage in in-depth exchanges and consensus-building. Under the leadership of President Zhang Lu, the International Zheng He Society of Singapore actively participated, connecting Maritime Silk Road cities and establishing cooperation through various forms such as international friendly city collaboration and world cultural heritage protection, forging a path for the common prosperity of global Maritime Silk Road cities.
